Choosing a Therapist

What do you need to know before you choose a therapist? For most people, several things are important.

First, does this therapist have the professional experience and training to really help you? My professional qualifications are listed in the sidebar to the right, and, if you’d like, you can read more about my experience and approaches to therapy in some of the articles I have written. If you would like a complete list of my experience and training, I can give that to you when we meet.

Secondly, will this therapist understand you? Will she or he have values and life experiences that are compatible with your values and beliefs? My life has been a journey of healing, and the optimism I have developed from overcoming my own difficulties and seeing my clients overcome their difficulties gives me confidence in the power of each individual to find a better life.

“How can we heal this?”
“How can this be made better?”

These are the questions that inspire the healing journey. My own healing journey began with some serious illness in college. After the medical doctors had done what they could, I was on my own to figure out how to feel better. I also needed to overcome the depression and anxiety that clouded my life. I studied co-counseling, visualization, herbs, meditation, and yoga. I dove into spirituality and I lived in a yoga ashram (in the US) where I was a full time yoga instructor. My journey then led me to massage school, and then a specialization in a form of energy bodywork called Polarity Therapy. In the mid 1970’s, I was a founding member of a holistic healing center in Portland, Oregon.

Although I no longer use touch in the psychotherapy work I do with clients, the connection between body and mind became very clear during my years as a bodywork therapist, and this holistic understanding continues to inform my work with my counseling clients today. As I began to study counseling and psychotherapy approaches, I chose to learn methods that have an integrated body-mind approach such as Focusing, Hakomi, Ericksonian approaches, Gestalt, and others.

I completed a traditional Counseling Psychology masters degree and learned the best that western psychology has to offer. Now as I work with clients, I integrate the knowledge of cognitive therapy, systems approaches, and behavioral change with more holistic approaches. I have been trained in EMDR and EFT and find these newer approaches can also be very useful for some people.

Over the years, I have continued on my own healing journey, exploring many forms of therapy and many forms of spiritual practice, both Eastern and Western, finding the unity at the heart of diversity.

I began private practice in counseling over 30 years ago- first in Oregon, then New Mexico, and now in San Diego, California. I have found that different approaches can be right for different people at different points in their healing journey, and I am able to customize your therapy to meet your unique needs and your specific goals.

I would love to assist you in your journey to wholeness and wellness. Please give me a call or text me at 619-415-3568 or email me so we can discuss whether I might be the right therapist for you.

I look forward to talking with you and hearing your story.
